Warriors step up Durant interest amidst Curry injury problem

The Golden State Warriors have stepped up on their interest in signing on Kevin Durant as Stephen Curry’s took a sprain to his right knee.

It was a fortunate turn of events for the team when it was announced that Curry only had a grade 1 medial collateral ligament (MCL) after taking a particularly nasty fall against the Toronto Raptors in the NBA playoffs.

While there are plans to re-evaluate him in two-weeks, most believe that he could make a return earlier.

But his absence jeopardizes his team’s attempt to reclaim their place as champions. This appears to be the reason that the Warriors are now more determined than ever to chase for Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant.

This was not the first time that the Warriors have queried Durant’s availability, even if they risk changing a good portion of their 73-win roster and the team’s chemistry.

Curry’s injury problem appears to be the core of their issue. The Warriors needed a core that would hold together even if they did lose their best, even if there is a possibility of losing team chemistry in the process.

On the other hand, since it was added from reports that because Curry’s injury does not actually “changes anything” for the Warriors, the notion was merely that adding Durant will be worthwhile.

The Warriors also have the salary cap issue to address. The team is unlikely to sign Durant on with their current salary cap space. They would likely have to clear salary, perhaps getting rid of the combined $22 million that Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut will make next season.

They may also lose restricted free agents like Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli should they sign offer sheets with other teams before the Warriors could secure Durant. In a nutshell, signing on Durant would need a lot of things to be handled first, before the Warriors even consider the possibility of creating their “super team.”

Clinching another feather for their already down-filled hat, the Golden State Warriors breaks yet another record by tying the Bulls’ 96 record of a 44 home wins streak, beating the Oklahoma City Thunders by 121-106 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.

MVP Steph Curry, recently named the Kia NBA Western Conference Player of the Month for his February performance scores 33 point and goes five for fifteen from long range in what was a rematch of last week’s epic.

The Warriors were trailing 80-71 to the Thunders playing the back-half of a back-to back. Taking control of the game, Golden State cuts their gap to one and lead during the fourth, scoring the first seven points thanks to a Marreese Speights 3-pointer and a firm game from Shaun Livingston.

They immediately widened the gap when the starters returned, pushing up to 106-97 with Curry’s 3-point play with little more than 4 minutes left. Andrew Bogut then managed to steal the ball from Kevin Durant which then led to a dunk by Thompson, making it a 12-point gap.

Steph Curry merely added two late 3s to seal the Thunders’ fate.

Showing few effects after being rested for a sprained ankle, Curry beat Durant with a crossover for his first basket, and hits two 3-pointers in the first quarter to extend his streak to 130 straight games with a 3.

Warriors heavy favourites for signing Kevin Durant

Warriors heavy favourites for signing Kevin Durant

The Golden State Warriors are the heavy favourites to rein in Kevin Durant should Oklahoma City Thunders be releasing the forward on free agent at the end of this NBA season.

Durant will be on free agent at the end of this season, and though he has not revealed interest in leaving the Thunders it would be apt to consider that he could be intrigued by the idea of joining the defending champions, going 44-4 this season.

Warriors forward Draymond Green, one of the team’s leaders, stands firmly behind the aggressive push for Durant. Fitting him into Golden State’s salary situation would take some maneuvering, but the current Warriors have the flexibility in their wallets to do so.

Representing a continuous efforts on part of the Warriors, the pursuit for Durant predates even their 2015 championship run. Washington, Houston and Miami are all expected to be suitors and have been tied to Durant previously. The Clippers are also thought to be in the mix, with the Lakers being an extreme long shot.

Fueled by rumours and reports everywhere, the deal is ‘unthinkable’ with almost everyone believing that the move could ‘change the landscape of the NBA’.

If the transfer works out, Kevin Durant will play side-by-side with the best stars in the league such as reigning MVP Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Green. He will be joining them in the coming All-Star Festivities, having trained with them as part of the USA basketball team.
