Chelsea to end winless blues against Manchester City

Published by:

Premier League leaders Chelsea and third-placed Man City will fight it out in the weekend, where the winner could claim the league summit.

Pep Guardiola’s men have won their last two EPL meetings with Chelsea, both at a 3-0 result. While Chelsea beat them 5-1 in a FA Cup fifth round game in February, the visitors were fielding a weakened side.

However, the Manchester side hasn’t won three in succession against the Blues since the 2010/11 season.

City would also have to wait to determine if Raheem Sterling is fit to play, after being forced off in the win against Burnley after suffering a knock. Kevin de Bruyne, John Stones, David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan could earn recalls to the starting line-up after being rested during their League Cup fixture mid-week.

Chelsea on the other hand have collected just two points from their last four league games against City (D2, L2), which is their longest winless streak against them in the competition’s history (four games). They have now lost six of their last eight games away to Manchester City in league and cup, with their only win coming courtesy of a Branislav Ivanovic strike in February 2014.

But a record that holds to their advantage is that Chelsea has won 11 games away at Manchester City in the Premier League – their highest total against a particular team in the competition’s history.

Blues manager Antonio Conte may name an unchanged side for a seventh consecutive league game. John Terry remains sidelined while Mikel John Obi’s muscular problem will be assessed.

Chelsea set to make bid for Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli

Premier League giants Chelsea is set to make a bid for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.

As Blues manager Antonio Conte tries to add depth to his squad before the summer transfer window closes, his club will make a €35m bid for the 21-year-old Italian international, with an additional €5m in performance-related add-ons.

Conte has been eager to bring in a defender, a striker and a reserve goalkeeper before the transfer season closes next week.

The Italian coach sees Romagnoli as a long-term replacement for club captain John Terry, who has started the first two Premier League games for Chelsea alongside Gary Cahill.

But with Kurt Zouma injured, the Italian manager feels he is a player short in that position, despite the fact that Branislav Ivanovic can also assume centre-back role.

Romagnoli, who arrived from Roma for €25m last summer, has a contract with Milan that stretches to 2020 that also pays around €2m a year. Chelsea is likely to offer in the region of €3.5m a year.

However, Milan was reported to be keen to keep him, but would sell the player should they be able to get an adequate replacement.

Rumours have it that the club is interested in signing Sao Paulo’s Rodrigo Caio.
