Great Britain has lost the opportunity to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics once again after a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Italy.

Held in Cortina, the hosts took the first period with pace and power that overwhelmed the Great Britain team, taking a 3-0 lead.

Italy, standing at rank 18 extended the score gap in the second period before goals from Ashley Tait and David Clarke scored and shortened the gap to two.

However, the squadra azzurra strove to retake their lead before the final period, and when defenceman Alexander Gellert made it 5-2 the game was all but over, and Italy took home the decisive game.

Home fans wildly celebrated Gellert’s goal, who was in turn thrilled by the experience of representing his own country.

Gellert’s goal was greeted by a huge roar from his home fans and he was thrilled by the experience of representing his country on home ice.

“I feel really lucky to be able to play here with this great support from the fans,” he said.

“Thanks to the GB fans as well – they really got some electricity into the building.”

As Italy looks forward to travelling to Norway for the Olympic qualifiers, Team GB would return home having never qualified for the multinational competition since 1948.

Chad Johnson stretches out to make a stunning save.

Playing up against the Philadelphia Flyers, Johnson was steady, turning aside 30 of the 33 shots he faced.

However his biggest stop came in overtime and helped the Sabres pick up a third win in their NHL season.

That’s rookie Scott Laughton who was robbed by Johnson, and, as things tend to go in hockey, a big save at one end often leads to the game-winner at the other.

Only 33 seconds after Johnson’s miraculous stop, the puck was turned over by the Flyers as they entered Buffalo’s zone.

Argentina, despite debut goal from Alan Forsyth.

Sam Ward also found the net but two goals from Matias Paredes and Gonzalo Peillat’s penalty corner sealed victory for the visitors.

“We fell right into their trap as we were sloppy at times in possession which allowed them to counter-attack,” said GB head coach Bobby Crutchley.

“That’s what they’re looking for and that’s why it’s frustrating.”

Britain is now in the midst of preparations for the World League Final 27 November in India. The test match will assess both their mettle and poise.

The second Test against Argentina will be held on Wednesday at the same venue.

India’s Gurjinder Singh failed to convert India’s only penalty.

India men’s hockey team lost to New Zealand 0-2 in the opening Test match of the four-match at Nelson on Tuesday.

New Zealand took the lead early in the sixth minute via a penalty corner conversion by Nick Haig. In the second half, the hosts double the lead when Jared Panchia found the net late in the second half.

It was evident that New Zealand mens hockey team had the control of the game in the first two halves of the first Test match.

The hosts continued to remain upbeat and looked for more goals in the second half as well. They eventually doubled their lead late in the second half when Jared Panchia found the back of the net just ahead of the final whistle.

Meanwhile, India’s Gurjinder Singh failed to convert the lone penalty corner earned by India. The visitors came back strongly in the third and the fourth quarter but failed to find the net.

One would have expected a better result from India after they had won two back-to-back games against New Zealand A team ahead of this first Test match, but they could not carry that momentum into this game and ended up losing it.

India will surely try and bounce back in this series against the upbeat hosts in the second Test match of the series, which will be played on Wednesday.
