Curry and Warriors set NBA record for fastest 50th win

The Golden State Warriors would add another feather to their hat as they set history for becoming the fastest team to get 50 wins in one NBA season as they defeat the Atlanta Hawks by 102 to 92.

Even in a night that Stephen Curry did not look to be in his best, the basketball aces still managed to score 36 points and 8 assists.

The Warriors appeared headed for a rout against the struggling Hawks, pushing out to a 23-point lead approaching the midway point of the third quarter.

But Atlanta managed to cut the gap with a 28-6 run and grabbed a one-point lead briefly early in the fourth, igniting the sellout crowd in the Philips Arena. However, Warriors merely showed a routine performance that shows why they were the best to pull away and finish the job.

The Western Conference team broke the record set by Chicago Bulls during the 1995-1996 season, which saw the Michael Jordan-led team reached 50 victories in 56 games. The Warriors achieved the same feat with one game less.

The team will now be chasing a second Bulls record in that same season – the only team who finished 72-10 and win over 70 games in a game year.

But as their ace Steph Curry puts it, “Fifty wins is great but we’ve got to keep plugging away and staying hungry, because nobody wants to talk about that in June.” – It’s obvious to anyone that Curry and co hunger for their 73rd.

And should they keep playing the way they are playing this season, it will not be an unreachable dream for the defending champions.

Anderson Varejao agree to Warriors veteran deal

Anderson Varejao agree to Warriors veteran deal

Former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao had agreed to sign on with defending NBA champions the Golden State Warriors for a veteran’s minimum.

The Brazilian revealed that he will be staying with the Warriors for the remainder of the season.

Varejao spent his entire 12-year NBA career with the Cavs, and had recently been dealt to Portland after the Blazers acquired him from the Cavs. The Blazers promptly waived Varejao although he still has two years and nearly $14 million in guaranteed money left on his contract after this season.

At 49-5, the Warriors holds the best record in this season team performances but is somewhat injury-plagued.

They are especially short on their attacking front, with Festus Ezeli recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and Andrew Bogut nursing an Achilles injury.

The timing of Varejao’s arrival could not be better as he is poised to provide relief for the Warriors’ ranks; his 6-foot-10 frame would contribute and probably even raise the team’s average size.

In a corresponding move, Warriors will be releasing their own forward Jason Thompson for an open roster spot.

Cleveland Cavaliers (39-14) gathered their fourth consecutive victory and finally managed to take down the Chicago Bulls (27-26), cruising to a 106-95 win at the Quicken Loans Arena.

The Bulls had an 2-0 encounter advantage but lost much team structure and ability with injury, with Jimmy Butler (knee), Nikola Mirotic (hematoma) and Joakim Noah (shoulder) all sidelined.

With offense placed solely shoulders of Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol, the Bulls were all over the place.

Meanwhile, Cavaliers’ Lebron James opened the scoreboard and got the team’s first 8 points but looked slightly bumped out with 2:51 left in the first quarter.

But he still managed to dominate when they returned, nearly taking a second triple-double in 3 games. He finished the game with 25 points, nine rebounds and nine assists – the 419th 25-5-5 of his career, an all time-NBA record.

Kyrie Irving recorded 19 points. Kevin Love had 15 points, 15 rebounds and a block. Tristan Thompson provided 16 points and 10 boards.

Tyronn Lue said his team’s defensive intensity has been lacking and he had to be pleased with what he saw tonight. Still, the Bulls failed to reach 40 percent shooting and lost the rebounding battle 52-49 as well as blocks and steals (8-4 each).

Russell Westbrook, Western Conference shines in All-stars

As the final buzzer rang, all eyes were on Kobe Bryant as the Lakers veteran embraced his teammates and received a standing ovation from all around.

And so, the NBA legend had played his last All-Stars game, helping the Western Conference win by 196 to 73 and finishing with 10 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds.

Held in Toronto, it was the first NBA game outside of the U.S., and also is one of the highest scoring ones.

Otherwise, it was business as usual in the All-stars match, with tonnes of slam dunks and mesmerizing downtown nets.

“It was fun.” Bryant said.

“I had a blast playing with those guys, laughing and joking with them on the bench.”

West coach Gregg Popovich likens Bryant’s departure as “passing the torch” to the younger generation of NBA players.

Meanwhile, Thunders’ Russell Westbrook took the honour of MVP, for the second time, winning a six of possible 12 votes.

The point guard poured in a team-high of 31 points, as well as taking eight rebounds, five assists and steals in just 22 minutes. Still, it was a slight decrease from his 41 points last year as a reserve.

“I was honestly surprised I won it again,” Westbrook said. “I was very surprised to have my name called.”

“I’m happy and blessed to be in the game again and for the opportunity.”
