EPL round-up: Bournemouth and Hull boost survival hopes

Published by:

Bournemouth and Hull City has boosted their respective hopes of staying up in the Premier League after registering victories in their respective fixture this week.

It was also an important one for Bournemouth as the team managed to secure their first win in the calendar year — a 3-2 victory against West Ham United, thanks to Joshua King’s hat-trick despite missing two penalties.

King had missed from the spot after Marc Pugh was fouled early on, and 48 seconds later West Ham took the lead when Michail Antonio swept a low shot into the bottom corner.

Another spot kick came to Bournemouth after Marc Pugh was fouled but again it was squandered as Darren Randolph saved Benik Afobe’s effort.

Even then, the hosts did not let their heads drop and their spirit was rewarded as they went level with King hooking the ball over his marker before volleying home. He then made it 2-1 with a close range finish just after the break.

Andre Ayew seemed to have earn a draw for West Ham with a placed finished late on but King stole the points deservedly when he thumped the ball into the roof of the net after Randolph had denied substitute Jack Wilshere.

As Bournemouth moved above Leicester City to a more secure spot at 30 points with 10 games to go, Hull City too won a vital match for the full 3 points.

Playing against fellow strugglers Swansea City, Oumar Niasse scored a brace for the Tigers in the space of nine minutes to secure a 2-1 win even as Swansea defender Alfie Mawson pulled one back in injury time.

Hull are now level on points against Leicester City on 27 at 16th place, although the Foxes have a game in hand against the Swans.

FA Cup: Man United to play Chelsea without forwards

Published by:

Manchester United will face Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals without any of their forwards.

Red Devils captain Wayne Rooney was ruled out with injury after a collision with Phil Jones in training, while top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic begins a three-game ban for elbowing Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings.

With forwards Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford (illness) also both missing for the holders, United coach Jose Mourinho has no recognised striker available for selection.

Their busy schedule also saw them play Rostov in Russia in the Europa League, which sets them far apart from Chelsea’s more relaxed schedule — the Blues do not feature in Europe this season.

But Mourinho is yet to throw in the towel.

“We cannot go with Nicky Butt’s team [players from the under-23 team, managed by former United midfielder Butt],” the Portuguese said at the pre-match conference.

“Manchester United is too big. Manchester United is the winner of the competition. It is not Chelsea’s fault fault that we were given this Monday match, so we have to make changes for sure… but we cannot go to Stamford Bridge with a Nicky Butt team.”

On the other hand, his Chelsea counterpart Antonio Conte has a fully-fit squad at his disposal, and will host the Manchester club at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues managed 12 consecutive home wins in all competitions.

Match facts:

  • Both teams have met on 11 occasions in the FA Cup. United won 8, while Chelsea won 3.
  • Only two of those games were after 2000, and Chelsea won both.
  • Under Conte, the Blues are also unbeaten in their last 11 league and cup games against United (W6, D5), and have only conceded three times in their last nine encounters.
  • United won only two of their last 19 league and cup games at Stamford Bridge (D6, L11).

Prediction:

Chelsea 2 — 0 Manchester United

Inter Milan routs Atalanta with double hat-trick show

Internazionale leapt ahead to fight for a potential Champions League spot as the Milan team made easy work of Atalanta with two hat-tricks to win with a 7-1 score.

Mauro Icardi, captain for Inter, scored his goals between the 17th and 26th minutes — including a panenka, a chipped penalty. It was was the earliest for Inter in Serie A since Benito Lorenzi’s treble in the opening 18 minutes in 1947.

His fellow Argentine Banega scored twice in quick succession to make it 5-0 after 34 minutes.

Remo Freuler pulled one back for Atalanta before the break, but Roberto Gagliardini netted for Inter and Banega scored a 25-yard free-kick to complete his treble.

Inter then overtook Atalanta to move into fourth place in the league with the victory.

The coach Stefano Pioli hailed as an “exceptional” Inter performance.

“This was an exceptional performance where everything we practised worked perfectly,” the coach said. “It was a game of a high level and we did well to make it look easy, because Atalanta are a tough opponent and had conceded very few goals until now.”

“Inter want to fight every game with the belief that we can win it, but clearly there are some very experienced and talented sides ahead of us in the table and we are trailing.

“It was a good result, but what really counts is our position in the table and that means the next match is always the most important. It’s right to praise individuals, but today I want to just compliment the entire team, as we played with hunger and determination.”
