Serie A: AC Milan stalls Juventus’s surge with youth power

AC Milan managed to stall Juventus’s surge ahead in the Serie A thanks to the vital contribution of their young players.

Juve thought they had taken the lead early on when Miralem Pjanic’s long-range free-kick went into the net. But after a lengthy delay and discussion between the officials on whether a Juventus player was offside, it was disallowed.

Unpertubed, Juventus continued to pile the pressure upon their oppenents in the second half. However, 18-year-old midfielder Manuel Locatelli gave Milan a shock lead at the 65th minute with a spectacular, powerful effort from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Desperate for an equalizer, German midfielder Sami Khedira unleashed a long-range effort which looked destined for the top corner at the last seconds of the game – only for 17-year-old Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to produce a spectacular one-hand diving save, just as the referee blew the finals whistle right after.

Juventus have won the past five Serie A titles and are favourites to lift the Scudetto again this season, but backed by a vociferous San Siro crowd Milan managed to shorten their deficit against the table leaders to 2 points.

Roma later joined them in the chase against Juve after levelling with Milan at 19 points following an easy 4-1 victory over Palermo.
