Inter Milan defeats Juventus for the first time since 2012, sinking the Italian Champions to their first Serie A loss since October last year.
Juventus took the lead as Stephan Lichsteiner thumped in Alex Sandro’s low cross to in the 66th minute in a typically tense encounter. However, Inter captain Mauro Icardi just two minutes later by heading home from a corner.
Internazionale substitute Ivan Perisic then overturned his team’s losing streak against Juve by heading in a perfectly executed cross from Icardi.
It was a stunning response from Inter after their midweek Europa League defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva, even as the game grew more frantic after a ninety-minute red card on Inter’s midfielder Ever Banega.
As Inter moves up to sixth place after the win, while Juventus slips to second place behind Napoli.
Gonzalo Higuain, Juve’s summer signing from Napoli, was brought on when the scores were tied at 1-1, but failed to provide impact apart from a glancing header that narrowly misses the target.
On the other hand, Inter’s win could win Frank de Boer points with club owners after a troubled start to their Serie A campaign.
Before the d’Italia derby, Inter had only one win from three league games. Rumours surrounding the Dutchman’s future with the club swirled as the Nerazzurri got humiliated 2-0 at home by Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League. It was a result that prompted apologies and claims from de Boer that his side “lost their heads”.
