Liverpool and Chelsea are through the third round of the EFL Cup after registering victories in their respective League Cup fixtures.

The Reds looked strong as they overwhelmed Championship Burton Albion with a resounding victory with five goals to nil.

The route began in the 15th minute when Divock Origi flicked in from close range before Roberto Firmino headsin Nathaniel Clyne’s cross to double Liverpool’s lead.

As the Merseyside cup lead 2-0, Burton Albion’s Tom Naylor inadvertently put the ball in his own net after half-time as James Milner’s ball came at him with fearsome pace, essentially killing the game for his team.

Daniel Sturridge, who was subbed into the game for Roberto Firmino after the break, made it 4-0 when he tapped in Milner’s low centre. He then ran unto a Sadio Mane assist to fire home from 15 yards, thus earning his second goal in the space of six minutes.

during the EFL Cup second round match between Chelsea and Bristol Rovers at Stamford Bridge on August 23, 2016 in London, England.

Michy Bathsuayi’s double carried Chelsea over the line.

Things were not as easy for Chelsea as they were forced to a tense 3-2 victory against Bristol Rovers.

Michy Batshuayi volleyed in before a simple finish from Victor Moses looked enough for Chelsea to seal the game in the first half.

A towering header from Peter Hartley then brought the deficit back to one, before Bathsuayi widened the gap again by a tap in.

After that, Rovers converted a penalty early in the second half, throwing back the pressure on Chelsea.

The Blues enjoyed dominating possession in the first half, but wasteful finishing and brilliant goalkeeping from Steve Mildenhall saw them pressured up until the end of the game.

Joe Hart prepares for Guardiola era debut as Bravo flies in

Joe Hart will start for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola prepares his team to play Steaua Bucharest in the second leg of their Champions League playoff fixture.

Hart, 29, has a place in the England World-Cup qualifying team, confirmed by England boss Sam Allardyce.

However, he is yet to make an appearance for his club, and Guardiola had informed him that he could leave the team.

Guardiola, who took charge of City in the summer, had expressed his preference for a ‘sweeper-keeper’ and thus did not field Hart in any of City’s competitive games since the start of the season.

The match against Steaua could even be interpreted as bearing no significance as City leads 5-0 going into the game.

Barcelona keeper Claudio Bravo arrives at Manchester airport.

Meanwhile, Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is reportedly set for a medical at Manchester City.

The Chile International, 33, has flew into Manchester.

Manchester City did not comment on the matter, but Bravo was understood to have been told that he could leave the La Liga champions.

“I cannot deny what everyone knows,” Guardiola said. “The deal is not complete. After I will answer about a player who at the moment is not our player.”

Chelsea set to make bid for Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli

Premier League giants Chelsea is set to make a bid for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.

As Blues manager Antonio Conte tries to add depth to his squad before the summer transfer window closes, his club will make a €35m bid for the 21-year-old Italian international, with an additional €5m in performance-related add-ons.

Conte has been eager to bring in a defender, a striker and a reserve goalkeeper before the transfer season closes next week.

The Italian coach sees Romagnoli as a long-term replacement for club captain John Terry, who has started the first two Premier League games for Chelsea alongside Gary Cahill.

But with Kurt Zouma injured, the Italian manager feels he is a player short in that position, despite the fact that Branislav Ivanovic can also assume centre-back role.

Romagnoli, who arrived from Roma for €25m last summer, has a contract with Milan that stretches to 2020 that also pays around €2m a year. Chelsea is likely to offer in the region of €3.5m a year.

However, Milan was reported to be keen to keep him, but would sell the player should they be able to get an adequate replacement.

Rumours have it that the club is interested in signing Sao Paulo’s Rodrigo Caio.
