Atletico Madrid has announced that the club had signed French striker Kevin Gameiro in a four-year deal from fellow La Liga club Sevilla.
Atletico issued the following in a statement: “Atletico Madrid and Sevilla FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Kevin Gameiro to our club. The striker, who will sign for four seasons, will travel to Madrid this evening.”
“The transfer is contingent to the French player successfully undergoing a medical examination.”
The fee for the agreement was not disclosed, but reports suggested that the fee was around £28m.
Gameiro, 29, scored 67 goals in three years with Sevilla. His arrival will also tone down rumours of Atletico Madrid re-signing Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
“Diego Costa is our player,” Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had said in July. “He’s a fantastic player with fundamental importance. He’s very happy and is working hard.”
Gameiro will be aided in his initiation to the Spanish giants by the presence of his fellow French national, Antoine Griezmann.
“He is a great French player like myself,” Gameiro commented on Griezmann. “And I’m certain we’ll score a lot of goals together, although he hasn’t called me yet, he’s on holiday!”
“I’ve spoken to (club coachDiego Simeone) on the phone,” he added. “And he told me he wanted me and that we’d have a great season.”
“I like Atletico’s style of play, team and mentality. I think I can achieve many things here this season. I didn’t hesitate to come here, everything was clear to me.”
