Dele Alli charged with violent conduct in frustrating draw

Tottenham’s already slim chances to catch up with Leicester City on top of the Premier League could be dealt a further blow as Dele Alli was charged with violent conduct by the Football Association.

Spurs were left frustrated as a sound West Bromwich team forced them to a 1-1 draw at home, in which defender Craig Dawson scored a goals at both ends at both intervals to redeem himself.

Tottenham players did spoke for themselves with a firm performance but could not find the net, hitting the woodwork three times instead.

The stalemate meant that Tottenham is seven points adrift of the Foxes, who in turn could win the Premier League should they defeat this weekend. May had expected that Leicester would be the ones to crack, but it seems that it was Spurs who buckled at the final dash.

Meanwhile, footage had appeared, showing that Spurs frontman Alli had deliberately punched West Bromwich player Claudio Yaccob.

The incident had escaped the attention of referee Mike Jones and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. It was also not included in the referee’s match report.

As in the case of off-the-ball incidents not seen at the time by the match officials, a panel of three former elite referees will be called in to review such an incident.

Each referee panel member will review the video footage independently to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence. For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous.

20-year-old Alli, who won the PFA young player award a day before, could face a three-match suspension which effectively rules him out for the rest of season if found guilty of his charges.

Thus far, Alli has been a hugely influential figure in his debut season for Tottenham, scoring 10 goals so far and had formed an impressive partnership with striker Harry Kane. It is natural to assume suspension on Alli could hurt Tottenham’s title chances even more.

Pochettino said that Dele Alli was also known for his personality.

“Sometimes the opponents find him and try to provoke,” the Argentinian coach said. “They know he has a strong character and may react.”

Alli has until 1800 BST on the 27th of April to answer his charges.

Diego Simeone and Atletico readies for Bayern test

Diego Simeone and Atletico readies for Bayern test

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone expects that the Spanish giants will face a tough time against Bayern Munich even as his side managed to defeat last season’s Champions League winners Barcelona.

Bayern will travel to face a disciplined Atletico team that has beaten Barca by 2-0 to win 3-2 on aggregate in the quarter finals. Additionally, Atletico had managed to keep a clean sheet in 13 of its last 15 Champions League home games.

“I’m expecting a hard match against an opponent with a lot of attacking potential, against a coach who changes from game to game,” Simeone said of Bayern and their manager, Pep Guardiola.

“Bayern have many options, but in battles, the side with most soldiers does not win, but those who use their soldiers better,” he added.

On the other hand, Guardiola is convinced that he has to win the Champions League in order to make his time in charge of Bayern a success. The Bundesliga champions suffered exits twice in the semi-finals during the last two seasons, first against Real Madrid and then against Guardiola’s own former team, Barcelona.

The team had suffered first-leg defeats on visits on both occasion.

“Three semis in three years is not something that every team does,” Guardiola said. “I have read in Munich that without winning the Champions League, the work would not be complete. I must accept that.”

“But I am very fortunate to have lived and worked three years in Germany,” he added. “We will try and reach the final, as we did against Madrid and Barcelona, and now this year against Atletico.”

Nonetheless, both teams would enter the match without key players. Atletico had lost center-back Diego Godin to a hamstring injury, while Bayern Munich will play without Arjen Robben, who suffers from a thigh injury.

But Atletico could now start with Fernando Torres after the striker was sent off during the first-leg against Barcelona, just as Bayern welcomes Jerome Boateng who had been out for three months due to a groin injury.

Since then, they resurged to win 24 and draw one of 25 league games, claiming 73 points out of a possible 75 to take them on top of the Serie A and 12 points clear of second-placed Napoli.

“To win this season would be really crazy and unbelievable,” said the goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon after the away win at Fiorentina.

“We’ve shown the technical and moral strength of the group, the determination not to give in and our ability to astonish.”

Napoli on the other hand would woe squandering their chances to break the Serie A tittle off from Juventus’s iron grip after leading the table early on. Even then, they could not rest up as Roma are now within two points of the second place, which was also the final automatic Champions league placing.

Having just the slimmest of chances to chase Juventus, Napoli needed to win against Roma. But as Roma’s Radja Nainggolan scored the only goal in the final minute, Napoli chances were effectively vanquished with just 3 games left.
