Joel Matip will be leaving Schalke 04 and the Bundesliga on free transfer at the end of season to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
German-born Matip, 24, is part of Scalke since 9, emerging from the same youth system that hosted him and his former teammates, Mesut Ozil and Manuel Neuer.
The centre back have the physique to fit in the Premier League and is known to step forward to a holding midfield role. His ability to break-up play and recycle possession rapidly would reinforce Liverpool’s occasionally chaotic defense.
Matip said: “I have always said I would say goodbye to Schalke for only one reason: to get acquainted with something completely new.”
“Therefore, a change within the Bundesliga never came into consideration for me.”
“Schalke will remain a big family for me,” he added.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes that Liverpool saved millions by sealing the deal, but otherwise indicated that the team would not have a mass recruitment drive in the summer.
