Sunderland signs on Bayern Munich defender Jan Kirchhoff

Struggling Sunderland signed on Bayern Munich defender Ian Kirchhoff in their first transfer deal in the January transfer window.

The 25-year old German played in the Champions League with Bayern, and now signed an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee.

Black Cats manager Sam Allardyce said of the former German youth team player: “He has good pedigree – he started playing first-team football at 17 or 18 years old at Mainz and that he progressed to a club as big as Bayern Munich shows he has talent.”

“He’s frustrated at not being able to play a bigger part in Bayern’s team in the time he’s been there and he wants to experience the Premier League.”

Kirchhoff started his career at Mainz before joining Bayern on a free transfer in 2013.

Playing as a central defender for most of his career, he also showed his versatility by assuming a central midfield role during a loan spell at Schalke.

Sunderland are 19th in the Premier League, four points from safety, and travel to Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday
