Nick Kyrgios would feel in shape with an opening-day win as he prepares to meet tennis World Number Two Andy Murray.
Kyrgios recovered from losing the first set 6-4 to take the next two 6-1 6-4 as he beat German player Alexander Zverev in just over an hour.
The Australian will subsequently play against Murray as Australian Green meets Great Britain on Wednesday.
“I have been looking forward to that for a long time,” he said.
“I’m going to go and do everything I can to physically prepare for that battle.”
Andy Murray had knocked Kyrgios out of the Australian, French and US Opens in 2015.
The 20-year-old was also branded a bad boy, being fined £16,200 for remarks about Stan Wawrinka’s girlfriend last August.
