Jose Mourinho upset with conditions at Sammy Ofer Stadium

The pitch at Sammy Ofer Stadium was cut up badly throughout the Champions League Fixture.

Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho was furious with the playing conditions at Sammy Ofer Stadium.

The Portugese coach lost two players due to the “bad and dangerous” surface of the pitch as the team defeated Maccabi Tel-Aviv away by 4-0.

Chelsea midfielder Ramires sustained a muscle injury while training at the stadium on Monday, and Mourinho criticised the “very bad” pitch before Tuesday’s match kicked off.

Then, 72 minutes into the Champions League match John Terry picked up an ankle injury and was forced to leave the pitch in a stretcher.

The Chelsea captain would not be able to play in Sunday’s match at Tottenham.

Mourinho was so upset with those conditions that he went onto the pitch to fix it himself while the match was still in play.

Bad pitch conditions in competitive sport has always been a problem, especially with football in which players need the ball to roll smoothly over the grass.

Nonetheless, Mourinho believes Terry will recover, saying “My medical department is really good. John is a special guy, with a special desire to recover, but I don’t believe too much that he can play (against Spurs).”

Lionel Messi scores twice as he starts for Barcelona after absence from injury.

A brilliant Barcelona scores six past Roma to establish themselves as a favourite in the Champions League.

Lionel Messi finished off a 27-pass move and Luis Suarez scored a great volley as Barcelona celebrated group stage qualification with victory over Roma.

Suarez tapped home the opener and then Messi finished off a sublime move, before Suarez volleyed in his second.

Gerard Pique made it 4-0 from close range and Messi poked in another.

Adriano smashed in after Neymar had his penalty saved before Edin Dzeko headed in the single consolation goal for Roma in stoppage time.

This makes it 10 goals in 2 matches in 3 days for Barcelona, following their superb 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid last weekend.

With Lionel Messi starting, the match also marks the return of the attacking trio of Neymar, Suarez and Messi. They mesmerised Roma’s defence at the Nou Camp, especially with the 27 pass goal from Lionel Messi.

Twenty-seven passes: six touches for Lionel Messi, four for Neymar and two (including the final assist) for Luis Suarez as Messi scored Barcelona’s second.

All three were heavily involved in three of Barcelona’s six goals on a night when coach Luis Enrique’s side could have had a lot more.

  • Barca had 19 efforts on goal, of which 12 were on target
  • They had 71% possession
  • Barca made 775 passes; Roma made 308
  • Messi had eight shots; six on target. Suarez had three efforts; two on target. Neymar had four efforts on goal.

Maicon and the rest of the Roma defence were on the back foot for the majority of the match.

“We tried to play our football but tonight we didn’t manage to do anything,” the ex-Manchester City player said.

“We were lucky to lose only 6-1 actually. Our objectives for the season do not change but we have to play differently from tonight. We never really tried to play, we did zero, nothing.”

Coach Rudi Garcia added: “Right now Barca is unstoppable, it’s not a coincidence that they beat Madrid 4-0.

“For us the good news arrived before the match. The draw between Leverkusen and BATE keeps our options alive.”

A victory for Roma at home over Bate Borisov in the final match would secure their passage into the knockout round.
